Remembering the First Vision
Author: Steven C. Harper
There are four accounts dictated or written by Joseph Smith detailing a vision of heavenly beings who appeared in response to a prayer uttered in the woods near his home. Several secondary accounts were also recorded by contemporaries who heard him relate the event.
Skeptics highlight the variations in the accounts, while believers point out that the recitations were given at different times for varied purposes. But there is more to be learned from the differences in the accounts than one might suppose. They seem to reflect Joseph's gradual processing and growing understanding of what he experienced as a youth.
