The Testimonies of the Book of Mormon Witnesses
Author: Alexander L. Baugh
There were two sets of official witnesses to the plates given to Joseph Smith by the angel Moroni. The accounts of these experiences are recorded in the Book of Mormon. Skeptics have attempted to explain away these eyewitness accounts by discrediting the reliability of the men or saying they were deceived by the Prophet. If their testaments had been a fraud, at least one of those who later left the Church might, in their poverty, have been tempted to discount their testimony, but none ever did.
In addition to these eleven witness, several other individuals handled the plates and at least one woman, Mary Whitmer, told family members that she had been shown the plates.
The testimonies of the witnesses of the plates stand as a powerful confirmation of their existence.
